Bio

“Fowser’s writing and playing are appropriately straight ahead; his melodies come at you directly, and his tenor tone is clean and unaffected, with slightly dark shadings”

— DownBeat

Lauded by All About Jazz for “playing with a deep harmonic sensibility, often sidestepping traditional harmony,” tenor saxophonist and composer Ken Fowser has continued to steer the music in uncharted directions since his New York arrival in 2005. His lyrical approach to line construction and depth of harmonic sensibility have prompted worldwide collaborations, often recording, with such master players and burgeoning stars as Willie Jones III, Peter Bernstein, Jeremy Pelt, David Hazeltine, Gerald Cannon, Joe Farnsworth, Brian Charette, Joe Maganrelli, Steve Davis, Ed Cherry, Josh Evans, Bruce Harris, and more.

A prolific composer, Fowser has written and recorded more than 60 original works and issued six solo leader releases — five on on Posi-tone Records — following four co-led releases with vibraphone virtuoso Behn Gillece. Each of his albums has received significant radio play, and many have garnered favorable coverage from DownBeat, JazzTimes, Hot House Jazz Guide and All About Jazz. His debut leader release Standing Tall earned Fowser the number-one spot on JazzWeek Radio Chart seven weeks in a row. Each track reflects a contemporary treatment of conventional harmonic concepts — a creative manipulation that has become part of his signature sound as a composer and an arranger, as well as a soloist.

“[Fowser] poses a welcome alternative to the fast-lane excesses of some of his peers on the tenor saxophone”
